Specialties within Testing
A tour of the different testing specialties: focus, skills and value of each role so you can choose your path.
In testing there are many titles: manual tester, QA, QE, QAE… But what really sets professionals apart are their specialties: focus, skills and value. Beyond the title, what matters is the value you bring.
The specialties
Functional / Manual Tester
Validates features, flows and user behavior. Runs exploratory and black-box tests, thinks like a user and brings a practical, intuitive view.
Test Analyst / Designer
Defines test techniques by risk, coverage and priority. Designs efficient cases, ensures traceability between requirements, tests and results, and analyzes impact and acceptance criteria.
Automation Engineer
Designs and maintains scripts and frameworks. Automates Web, API, Mobile and Backend tests, integrates into CI/CD pipelines, optimizes regressions and reduces manual effort.
API / Backend Tester
Validates services, endpoints and business logic without a UI. Tests integrations and contracts with tools like Postman, RestAssured, Karate or SoapUI.
Mobile Tester
Evaluates native, hybrid and mobile-web apps on different devices. Validates usability, performance and compatibility with emulators, simulators and physical devices.
Performance & Load Tester
Evaluates response times, stability and capacity. Designs load and stress scenarios and finds bottlenecks with JMeter, Gatling or k6.
Security Tester / Ethical Hacker
Detects vulnerabilities and data-exposure risks. Runs penetration tests applying standards like OWASP and MITRE.
Accessibility Tester
Ensures products can be used by everyone. Validates standards like WCAG, keyboard navigation, screen readers and contrast.
Test / QA / QE Lead
Leads test planning, strategy and coordination. Manages risks, metrics and stakeholders, and drives a quality and mentoring culture.
Quality Engineer (QE)
Drives quality engineering across the whole cycle. Prevents defects with Shift Left, defines metrics and brings an end-to-end view and strategic automation.
AI Test Engineer / AI Quality
Evaluates AI models, prompts, datasets and answer quality. Detects bias and ethical risks and applies LLM evaluation techniques.
Remember
The job title does not define you, what you can do does. You can choose one or several specialties depending on where you want to go: this universe has room for every path.
